The “Tithe” Controversy:
Today, more than ever before, the Church is seriously plagued with different school of thoughts and doctrines concerning the subject of “Tithing”. It is interesting to see, how as The Church of Jesus Christ, we have allowed ourselves to be distracted with doctrines about money and other petty things. This really shows where our hearts truly are. This write up may not address the vast arguments about the subject of Tithing, but will endeavor to redirect our focus back to the One on Whom our focus should be.
Giving is an act
The Word “Tithe” simply means 10% or a tenth of something which may not necessarily be money. When we read through out the New Testament, Tithe is never mentioned as a doctrine by the Apostles in the Church. Some would say Jesus approved of tithes, and i say yes to that, but under the Old Covenant, which He fulfilled by His death and resurrection. Some would say, Paul mentioned the Tithe in Hebrews 7:2, and I say yes to that, but the context was to explain the change of Priesthood, from Aaron(Levi) to Jesus who is after the Order of Melchizedek.
In this New Priesthood after the Order of Jesus, the new man in Christ is a free will giver, not under any law or levy of payment.
To mention the Tithe as a Lawful giving or as a principle for prosperity is very deceptive and contradictory to the finished works of Christ. It is even more wicked to threaten Believers with messages such as “if you don’t tithe, you are cursed”. The worst of all, to manipulate Believers, that “If you don’t tithe, you will not make heaven”. These kind of wrong teachings, are completely contrary to the finished works of Christ.
One main portion of scriptures commonly used to enforce the Tithe doctrine is Malachi 3:8-10. “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it”. Many quote this portion out of context to twist-arm Believers in giving, such giving manipulated by fear is not acceptable, being contrary to the New Testament giving. The verse bellow says it all. “And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: ” Galatians 3:12-13 KJV.
Christ has freed us from the Law, and brought us into a New Covenant ratified in His blood .In this New Covenant,we live according to the Law of the Holy Spirit. None of the Believers were told to give or to pay tithes in the Book of Acts, they all gave willingly and freely as the Holy Spirit moved on them. Look at Paul’s thoughts concerning giving, in the verses bellow. “Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop. I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give.
That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving”.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 MSG
Paul warned the Believers not to fall for sob stories or arm-twisting messages to coheres them to give, but that their giving must be willingly, thoughtful and in Faith. Let’s look at another scripture below to see the mindset of the Early Church when it came to giving. “All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had”.
Acts of the Apostles 4:32 NLT
True Believers in Christ are not caught up in the “Tithe” doctrine arguments, they live with a mindset that “What they own is not their own”. They lived in the 100% and not the 10% level. They give cheerfully and willingly, not under compulsion or obligation, especially as Led by the Holy Spirit. Those who want to give 10% of their earning to a church or any valid course, as the Holy Spirit leads them, that’s awesome; but don’t do it so as to prosper or to avoid being cursed or as an imposition, because God Who is Love does not imposes Himself on anyone. The curse was taken on the cross while you were still a sinner, not because you paid tithes, but because Jesus paid the price. This post is not written to stop Believers from giving, but to encourage them to give rightly and according to the New Testament. The person writing this post believes in giving for the cause of Christ, and is a generous giver. May the Holy Spirit help us give according to the TRUTH, and not according to the doctrines and traditions of men. #Life&Godlyness.
